Athletic Director Finalists

Northwest Missouri State named Mike Waddell (left), Steve Schofield (center) and Andy Peterson (right) as finalists for the vacant director of athletics position July 16. Each will visit campus this week. 

Three finalists for the vacant Northwest Missouri State director of athletics position are expected to each make separate visits to the University this week.

Northwest President John Jasinski announced the finalists in an email to University employees Monday morning.

The field includes Mike Waddell, Steven Schofield and interim director of athletics Andy Peterson.

“I provide my gratitude to (the) search committee members for their efforts,” Jasinski said in the email.

Each finalist’s visit to campus will include meetings with the search committee, athletics coaches and the Northwest leadership team.

The search committee consists of Vice President of Student Affairs Matt Baker, Associate Director of Athletics Lori Hopkins, athletic trainer Kelly Quinlin, tennis coach Mark Rosewell, assistant professor of recreation Tyler Tapps, Director of the School of Communication and Mass Media Matt Walker, volleyball coach Amy Woerth, and football coach Rich Wright.

Visits will be held July 17-19, beginning with Waddell.

Waddell is the Vice President of marketing and communication at Richmond Speedway in Richmond, Virginia. He has been there since 2016.

Waddell has 28 years of experience, including stints with several NCAA Division I athletic programs. Positions on his resume include Director of Athletics at Towson University and Interim Director of Athletics at the University of Akron.

He has a master’s degree in sports administration from Ohio University and a bachelor’s degree in sports management from Guilford College. 

Schofield visits campus July 18. He is the Deputy Director of Athletics for administration at the University of Northern Iowa. He has 17 years of experience, including stops as an Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance at Florida State University, the University of Maryland and the University of Minnesota.

His education includes a master’s degree in higher and postsecondary education from Arizona State University, and a bachelor’s degree in general studies with an emphasis in business, education and humanities from Northern Iowa.

The week concludes with Interim Director of Athletics Andy Peterson. Peterson has worn several hats at Northwest including athlete, graduate assistant, assistant coach, head coach and assistant director of athletics.

He briefly spent time as the assistant men’s basketball coach and head men’s golf coach at Southwestern Community College.

Peterson holds a master’s degree in physical education with an emphasis in athletic administration and agriculture, along with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics and horticulture from Northwest.

He is pursuing a doctoral degree in educational leadership and policy analysis from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
