As a child, you tend to mimic what you see and hear, even if what you are mimicking is violent.
The topic of TV and video game violence has been up for discussion for the past decade because of the number of shootings we have seen committed by teenagers.
What causes these teenagers to be so violent and aggressive? If you are raising your child and allow them to play any video game they please, you have your answer.
When playing these video games, you feel a sense power or control. These video games are teaching children the wrong message. In video games, you can die and then get back to playing again with no consequences. Teaching young adults that they can do awful things to people and have no repercussions is not sending the correct message.
According to the American Psychological Association (APA) Task Force on Violent Media, there is a direct correlation between violent video games and aggression.
“The research demonstrates a consistent relation between violent video game use and increases in aggressive behavior, aggressive cognitions and aggressive affect, and decreases in prosocial behavior, empathy and sensitivity to aggression,” the report of the APA Task Force on Violent Media said.
These studies show there is a correlation but are yet to prove that playing these video games directly cause people to commit violent crimes.
“Scientists have investigated the use of violent video games for more than two decades, but to date, there is very limited research addressing whether violent video games cause people to commit acts of criminal violence,” Mark Appelbaum, task force chair, said. “However, the link between violence in video games and increased aggression in players is one of the most studied and best established in the field.”
With all of the research being done on this topic, you can only imagine what it does for parents who have children and teenagers who are asking for and buying these violent video games. It puts them into a bad situation because they do not want to upset their children, but also do not want their children to be exposed to such violence. Parents, it is time to put your foot down and deny these teenagers the video games that could lead them to aggression.
Games such as Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Battlefield, Madworld, Mortal Combat and others are rated mature for a reason. Is it over-the-top to think no video games will have violence in them?
Apparently, yes, because even superhero video games will have some sort of violence to them, but the less you have, the better.
Teenagers should not be stressed out or become aggressive over a video game that is not real. It is time to take a stand on this topic before we end up with more tragic school shootings.
