Maryville Public Safety extinguishes a house fire Tuesday afternoon at 610 N. Walnut.

A Maryville resident’s house caught fire at 610 N. Walnut St. Tuesday afternoon.

Maryville Public Safety responded to a structure fire around 1:30 p.m. The fire appears to have started from resident Mindy Haidsiak’s living room.

The two story residential house is being rented out by Haidsiak and her teenage daughter. No resident was home when the fire erupted.

There were two cats and a dog in the home. Both cats are confirmed to be dead, the dog is still missing.

Neighbor and close friend to Haidsiak Heather Rauch called the fire in.

“I saw a lot of grey smoke. When I pulled up I lightly saw the fire out of the living room window,” Rauch said. “I heard a deep squeal and I knew it was her animals. I tried to open the door but it was just too hot… I will never get that scream out of my head.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
