No. 11 Northwest has found a way to win in each of it's 11 wins entering Saturday night's date with Pittsburg State at Bearcat Arena.
The latest adversity was overcoming a -16 rebounding margin to come away with a 69-64 win, extending their home winning streak to nine games.
"They're (Pittsburg State) a load on those offensive boards. They're just pretty darn physical and pretty darn good on the boards," Tappmeyer said.
Northwest is coming off a 59-57 loss to Missouri Southern, Wednesday in Joplin.
"Anytime you lose one, it's important to try and get that next one as quick as you can," Northwest coach Steve Tappmeyer said. "You can string five or six losses together very very easily in this league."
Both teams struggled with putting the ball in the basket, opening the game 0-for-14.
"I thought we were a little sluggish early and looked like a team that didn't have much confidence," Tappmeyer said.
After both teams got going, Northwest and Pittsburg State traded shots. With Northwest up 21-17, back to back three-pointers by Andy Peterson and Kelvin Cayruth opened the Bearcats lead to 27-17. Northwest went into halftime up 29-21.
After a layup by Pittsburg State's Ed Morris to open the half, Northwest (12-3, 5-1 MIAA) went on an 8-0 run. Northwest would lead by as much as 16 before Pittsburg State (9-6, 2-4 MIAA) got back into the game with an 8-0 run of their own. Keith Windom's three-pointer with 19 seconds left closed the deficit to 66-62, but free throws by Lance Sullivan sealed the game.
Hunter Henry led Northwest with 18 points. Andy Peterson had 10 points. Pitt State's Cory Abercrombie led all scorers with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Northwest hosts Truman State at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Bearcat Arena.
