(KANSAS CITY) - The Northwest Board of Regents on Wednesday took the first steps toward selecting President Dean Hubbard's successor after he retires in July 2009.

The University's governing board approved the creation of a 13-member search committee that would evaluate presidential candidates and eventually make a recommendation.

Board President Bill Loch will serve as the chair of the committee, which will include representation from both the University and Maryville.

The regents debated over the panel's composition, trying to find the balance between a small, efficient group and one that had fair representation of the campus and community.

In the end, the Board of Regents and faculty will have the largest presence on the committee, with three representatives each. The panel will also include representation from students, alumni, support staff, administrative/professional staff, Maryville and the president's Cabinet.

In other business, the regents discussed the possible hiring of an outside firm to help search for presidential candidates and aid the screening committee. Vice President of Finance and Support Services Ray Courter said the University would allocate about $150,000 for the entire presidential search, and the board decided to solicit and compare several firms before hiring one that would best suit Northwest.

With one regent, Douglas Wyckoff, not present at the meeting, and the desire for additional feedback from the campus and community on their actions, the board agreed to wait until Friday, Aug. 29 to finalize its decision. If no objections and/or questions are raised, the proposal will go through as is that day.

Here is a breakdown of the presidential search committee as proposed:

+Board of Regents - three members (includes Regent Doug Sutton, President Bill Loch and a third representative, to be determined)

+Northwest faculty - three members (to be chosen by the Northwest Faculty Senate)

+Northwest students - one member (Student Senate president)

+Northwest alumni - two members (one from the Northwest Foundation and another from the Alumni Association)

+Support staff - one member (to be chosen by the Northwest Support Staff Council)

+Administrative/Professional staff - one member (chosen through meetings with Loch and members of this group)

+Maryville - one member (to be determined by the mayor and city manager)

+Cabinet - one member
